BENGALURU: Returning after shopping at a nearby mall, a 24-year-old software professional was attacked and punched by two drunk men in the middle of the road on Saturday night. When the victim, Ajit, who hails from Patna in Bihar and works for a multinational company in southeast Bengaluru, ran for his safety and started screaming for help, the two attackers sped away on their motorcycles. The software professional was about to lose his consciousness when a passerby stopped and helped him. Immediately after, he approached the Kadugodi police, but they refused to register a complaint and sent him back. The victim tweeted about the incident to the police commissioner, who directed the Kadugodi police to register a complaint. A non-cognizable report was registered.
Narrating the incident, Ajit told Deccan Chronicle, “I had gone to shop for groceries and was returning home on Belathur Main Road around 8.45 p.m. I had bags full of groceries on my Scooty. As I reached near Retreat Signal, a packet fell from the bike and I stopped the vehicle to retrieve the packet. When I was picking up the packet on the road, I saw two men fiddling with my bags on the scooter. Before I could ask them anything, one of them came running towards me shouting. He was reeking of alcohol and he snatched the packet from my hand and shouted something in Kannada. All I could make out was that he was trying to ask me why I picked the packet up. Before I knew, they threw punches at me. They punched me in the face, head and neck. I frantically tried to get away from them. But it didn't work. I started shouting for help and ran in the middle of the road. Vehicles slowed down but none of them stopped. I was about to fall when I saw a bike taking a U-turn. The biker along with his wife didn't think twice before coming to my help. After the couple arrived, the attackers snatched the grocery bag, started their bike and sped away. It was already late when I realized that I should note down the plate number. All I could make out was KA xxxxx 8400.”
The ordeal didn’t there end for Ajit. When he went to the Kadugodi police station along with the Good Samaritan, Sunny Dayal Shaw, who came to his rescue, the police allegedly refused to register the complaint. “The first question they asked me was why I did not dial 100? I told them that I was being punched and I had no way of pulling out my phone to call the number. We told the whole story, but they didn’t register any complaint or FIR. They told me that they cannot do anything because I couldn’t give them all the numbers of the number plate on the attackers’ bike,” he said.
