Hyderabad: Convict absconding for 12 years, nabbed

He was caught when he came to visit his brother.

Hyderabad: Almost 12 years after he escaped from an armed police escort at Chandanagar, a murder convict was arrested in the city on Wednesday. Absconding murder convict Syed Abdul Rahaman was arrested along with his brother Mohd Javeed on Wednesday for chain-snatching, the Rachakonda police said.

The arrests were made based on CCTV camera footage of the chain-snatching incident that took place at Vishnupuri Colony in Saroornagar on January 13. Ms C. Susheela, 58, was sweeping in front of her house when an unidentified man snatched the gold chain she was wearing and fled in an autorickshaw.

During investigations, police extensively analysed the CCTV footage and identified the chain snatcher as Rahaman, 48, living in Bidar of Karnataka. His norther Javeed, 33, an autorickshaw driver from Bhavaninagar in Yakutpura, was also arrested.

Rahaman was allegedly involved in 22 cases including a murder at Kulsumpura in 2004.

Rachakonda DCP (Crimes) K.R. Nagaraju said Rahaman was a known offender and was earlier arrested by the city police for theft of automobiles, including lorries.

Mr Nagaraju said Rahaman was arrested for a murder at Kulsumpura in 2004. He obtained bail and was caught after committing a dacoity at Bidar. Meanwhile, he was convicted in the murder case.

Rahaman was being brought back from Bidar when he escaped near BHEL in Chandanagar and fled to Borgi village, where he took shelter for 12 years, Mr Nagaraju said. A week ago, Rahaman came to his brother’s house in Talabkatta and the duo planned to snatch chains.

After they were arrested, police seized the stolen gold chain, two mobile phones and the autorickshaw used for the offence from the brothers who were remanded to judicial custody.
