Guwahati: Tension prevailed in Central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district after an angry mob vandalised a large number of shops and damaged vehicles at Bakalighat on Sunday.

The incident took place after a girl, a Class XII student of Bakalighat college, eloped with one Jiar Hussain on January 13. The family members of the girl also lodged an FIR.

Informing that action was taken immediately and the girl was rescued from the neighbouring Nagaon district on Sunday night, security sources said that some local leaders mobilised a mob of more than two thousand people and gheraoed Bakalighat police station. They demanded police to rescue the girl who had allegedly eloped with a man from different community.

The angry mob pelted stones at the police who in turn resorted to lathi-charge and opened fire in the air to disperse the crowd.

The incident took a communal colour after a local unit of Bajrang Dal called for a bandh. Senior police officers who met here on Monday reviewed the law and order situation and rushed additional forces to restore normalcy.
