US lottery scam: Man loses Rs 1.56 lakhs

According to the complaint, Joshi received a call few days ago from a person identifying himself as Steven.

Bengaluru: The lure to amass a quick fortune thorough a lucky draw in US dollars (amounting to Rs 1.5 crore) made a Yelahanka-based man poorer by Rs 1.56 lakh, after he fell into a trap set by two conmen.

Posing as executives of a foreign company, the two conmen had called up Rathnakar Joshi, a resident of Yelahanka New Town. On Sunday, he approached the jurisdictional police and filed a complaint.

According to the complaint, Joshi received a call few days ago from a person identifying himself as Steven. The caller allegedly informed Joshi that he has won Rs 1.5 crore worth US dollars and sought bank details to transfer the money.

Elated over the news, Joshi shared his bank account details. Few hours later Steven called him informing that Joshi should pay Rs 68,000 as processing fee to transfer the money and gave him the account number and informed Steven.

However the next day, Steven called him asking for Rs 88,000 towards the various charges to get the foreign funds and said that his colleague would come to Bengaluru in person and deliver the amount. Joshi transferred the amount and waited for the company’s representative response, stated the complaint.

Last Thursday a person identifying himself as Abraham called him and informed him that he had come with the cash and was waiting at the Bengaluru city railway station and asked him to come and receive the delivery.

Joshi rushed to the railway station and met Abraham who handed him over a briefcase and asked him to go home and open since the currency bundled are laced with chemical for security reasons.
