Hyderabad: Stray dog brutally beaten, one held

Witnesses say Narasimha K. beat a stray dog ruthlessly with a wooden stick and then dragged the unconscious animal across a busy road.

Hyderabad: A man was taken into police custody yesterday and booked under section 428 and 429 (killing or maiming an animal) and under section 11 of the Animal Cruelty Act.

Witnesses say Narasimha K. beat a stray dog ruthlessly with a wooden stick and then dragged the unconscious animal across a busy road, to dump it in a vacant plot.

Onlookers who tried to stop him said that he shooed them away with the stick and did not let anyone approach the animal. The incident occurred in Cherlapally at around 7 pm. Teja Panneru of Brindham Colony who informed the police, said that since the dog showed some signs of life, “we rushed the animal to the vet were it was found to have multiple fractures and severe internal bleeding.”

Bolisheet Sreenivas, SI of Kushaiguda says, “The man said that he resorted to violence after the stray dog tried to attack his two children. However, that is not an excuse for such violence. We took him into custody yesterday itself and have booked him.”

The dog is in a critical condition. On January 14 around 50 dogs in Sahara Estates at LB Nagar were beaten up by 30 men with wooden sticks to keep them away from the gated community.

The current policy with regard to stray dogs continues to put both dogs and humans at risk.
