Andhra Pradesh: Pregnant woman ends life over dowry demands

The woman took the extreme step unable to bear the harassment for additional dowry by her husband and in-laws.

Rajahmundry: A married pregnant woman committed suicide by jumping into the Godavari canal, at Kurellagudem village of Bhimadole mandal in West Godavari. The woman took the extreme step unable to bear the harassment for additional dowry by her husband and in-laws.

According to the Bhimadole police, Satyavarapu Swathi, 27 from Kurellagudem was married to Veerraju a police constable with the Yusufguda police station in Hyderabad for over two years. She was being harassed for additional dowry by her husband and in-laws for some time. As she was three months pregnant her parents had brought her home.

On December 7, her husband called her and demanded an additional dowry of Rs 5 lakh. He even allegedly threatened to kill her if she failed to oblige to his demand. Depressed, she left her house at night the same day and went missing. Her body was traced in front of the Kanchi Kamakshi Colony on December 8. Police have booked a case and investigation is on.
