Bengaluru: Drunken brawl lands rape accused in police net

Cops arrest Nagarjuna from Marathahalli bar, learn he has been on the run.

Bengaluru: In a stroke of utter bad luck for a criminal and good fortune for the authorities, a man arrested for a drunken brawl turned out to be a convict on the run from alleged gang rape charges. 29-year-old techie Nagarjuna, a resident of Marathahalli, had been absconding for a month after a 39-year-old woman filed charges of cheating and rape against him.

According to police, the man was detained by the night patrolling team after a drunken brawl near a bar in Marathahalli. During the investigation, police learned that the man was accused of cheating and rape and had been hiding for the last month.

Nagarjuna was married and had a one-year-old son. He had created a profile on a matrimonial website and used it to get in touch with a woman from Hyderabad in August, 2017. The woman is a divorcee with a 10-year-old son. He befriended her, told her he was single and promised to marry her. The couple had a physical relationship and the victim would travel to Bengaluru to visit her friend.

Trouble began soon enough, when she began to talk of marriage and found that he had begun to avoid her. To her surprise, she discovered later that the man was married.

She lodged a complaint with Marathahalli police on January 16 alleging that he had cheated and raped her. The man had remained in hiding since then, until he was arrested by the Marathahalli police on February 6, for indulging in a drunken brawl.

Nagarjuna alleged, on his part, that the woman had demanded Rs 20 lakh as compensation if he refused to marry her. Police have, however, arrested him and produced him before the court.
