Coimbatore: Boy jumps to death, friend in hospital after taking poison

Hari Anand was rescued and admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he is being treated in the ICU.

Coimbatore: The body of a 13-year-old boy was fished out from stagnant water in a 50-ft deep stone quarry in the suburbs of Coimbatore on Friday. Police said Siva of Chettipalayam and his friend, Hari Anand, 15, both tenth class students in a government school near Eddayarpalayam, had bunked classes recently and were roaming about, inviting censure from their parents.

Police said this had depressed the youth and on Thursday they had gone to a nearby abandoned stone quarry where Hari Anand consumed ant powder. One of Siva's neighbours noticed this and informed their parents. However, before their parents could reach the spot, Hari Anand had fainted and Siva had jumped into the deep waters in the stone quarry.

Hari Anand was rescued and admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he is being treated in the ICU. But in Siva's case, the worst that was feared happened. After two days of search, fire and rescue services personnel took out the body of Siva on Friday morning and sent it to the CMCH for post-mortem. Chettipalayam police have registered a case and further probe is progressing.
