Uttarakhand: Man kills beggar, disfigures him in plan to flee with lover

Mukarram planned to move to some other place, assume a new identity and live in peace with his girlfriend.

Roorkee: A married man and father of four from Roorkee allegedly killed a beggar, disfigured his face and put his own voter identity card in the beggar’s pocket, all so he could escape with his lover.

According to reports, Roorkee police said Mohammad Mukarram's plan was to lie low for some time while news of his "death" was circulated, and then run away with his lover – a 22-year-old woman from a different community.

Mukarram planned to move to some other place, assume a new identity and live in peace with his girlfriend. However, the plan was busted on Saturday when Mukarram was nabbed by police.

The mistake Mukarram made was to call his girlfriend repeatedly from a particular number, which the police had tapped. Mukarram had destroyed his old phone after the murder, but his conversations with his girlfriend gave him away.

Police found the body of a young, disfigured man in a field in Piran Kaliyar, Roorkee, on September 19. The voter ID card in the man’s pocket ‘revealed’ his identity.

The police tracked the document to a place called Manak Majra in Bhagwanpur, where the police found that the ‘dead’ man was in a relationship with a young woman.

"We came to know that Mukarram used to roam around with his girlfriend, who is from another community, in Piran Kaliyar, which is also a revered Sufi shrine," a police officer said. That was vital evidence.

After tapping the phones of both the accused and his girlfriend, the police realized that they were in constant touch, and Mukarram was continuously changing his location. The police laid a trap for him when he would meet his girlfriend in Piran Kaliyar, and he was apprehended on Saturday.
