Hyderabad: Couple steals Rs 28 lakh from bookie

He had kept the money at home for starting a gold business.

Hyderabad: The police on Sunday arrested a couple who allegedly cheated a cricket bookie of 28 lakh. Police said that bookie Hitech Gibusa got scared when cops visited his house on April 20 and hid the money in his neighbour’s house. He had kept the money at home for starting a gold business.

Police said Hitech Gibusa used to organise cricket betting years ago. Nearly 10 days ago when he and his friend Sudershan were at home, some people knocked on their door and when he opened, they said they were from the police.

"Gibusa, suspected that they had come to raid his house for cricket betting and he took the Rs 45 lakh which he had kept at home to start a gold business and gave it to their neighbour and requested her to keep it safe,” Banjara Hills ACP Uday Kumar Reddy said.

After sometime, he went to the neighbour to get the money. “The flat owner Vamsi Krishna assaulted him. Later, with the help of mediators he approached the victim for a settlement,” the ACP added. They gave him a bag containing Rs 28 lakh of which Rs 5 lakh will be taken as commission. But when he checked the bag he found only Rs17 lakh and realised that he had been cheated by Vamsi Krishna and his wife Praveena.

Police found that Vamshi Krishna and Praveena stole Rs 17 lakh from the bag initially and Rs 11 lakh the second time and returned the bag with only Rs 17 lakh. Police arrested Vamsi Krishna and Praveena and produced them before court, but the amount was not recovered from them. Police said the money could have been already spent.
