Telangana: Ex-maoist held for extortion

Police is still checking if Chandram had carried out the extortion and land grabbing for Nayeem.

Hyderabad: An ex-Maoist, who is believed to be an associate of gangster Nayeem, and his three associates have been arrested by the Siddipet police for extorting cash and property worth lakhs from a government school teacher. The suspect Battula Chandram and his aides Pastor Krishna, Sathyanarayana, and S. Raju, were earlier involved in around six other similar cases when Nayeem was alive. Police is still checking if Chandram had carried out the extortion and land grabbing for Nayeem.

Police said Chandram had worked for Dubbaka Dalam from 1996 till 1999, after which he came out of the Maoist movement. “We got information that Chandram and his brother Battula Mahesh had attended the marriage of a relative of Nayeem at Tukkuguda in 2015,” said Siddipet ACP G. Narasimha Reddy. Chandram had been absconding in four cases booked by the One Town police and two cases registered by Two Town police.

The new extortion case occurred a month back. Police said a teacher named V. Venkataiah faced threats from Chandram. “The suspect threatened the school teacher to grab his land worth lakhs. Following the victim’s complaint we arrested him,” the ACP said.
