Mananthavady: Brown sugar seized, 5 held

Drug worth about Rs 2 crore in market.

KALPETTA: Police arrested five persons, seizing 1 kilogram of ‘brown sugar’ worth about Rs 2 crore in the market from a lodge at Mananthavadi on Friday. The arrest was made on a tip off received by the Superintendent of Police Arul B Krishna. Three groups, the special wing under the SP, anti-narcotics squad and the team under Mananthavadi sub inspector PK Mani conducted the joint raids.
The brown Sugar was brought to be sold to two persons in Mananthavadi. Investigations are on to find out more.

Those arrested include persons from Kasargod, Kannur districts and one from Uttar Pradesh. They were Uparikkal Shaiju, 37, a native of Cherupuzha, Kannur, Peedikathazhe Madhusoodhanan, 56, native of Payyannur, Kannur, Panayanthatta Balakrishnan, 47, a native of Cheemeni, Kasargod, Kunnummal Ashokan, 45, a native of Kanjangad and Ajay Singh, 42, a native of Uttar Pradesh. The accused, produced at the NDPS court at Vadakara, were remanded to judicial custody.
