Irrigation department chief engg in ACB net

Draws salary of Rs 1 lakh, has assets worth Rs 5 crore.

Hyderabad: The ACB on Friday booked chief engineer K. Suresh Kumar of the irrigation department for possessing disproportionate assets worth crores. The market value of the assets was placed at about Rs 5 crore.

Kumar as head of the engineering wing of Mission Kakitaya, the government’s pet project to restore all water bodies, was in charge of accepting tenders for various works.

The ACB carried out searches at six locations owned by the accused and his close relatives in Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Prodattur in Kadapa district of AP.

Kumar joined service as assistant executive engineer with the irrigation department in 1986; as chief engineer he draws a monthly salary of around Rs 1 lakh. ACB sleuths are investigating how Kumar came to amass such wealth.

The ACB found 63 tola of gold ornaments at his Somajiguda residence. Kumar said it belonged to his son and daughter, who live abroad.

The ACB unearthed documents for unmovable properties in Hyderabad and Karimnagar. Three of his bank lockers are yet to be opened, the ACB said.
