Employee harassed by boss ends life in Bowenpally

Troubled 24-year-old staffer hangs herself at work.

Hyderabad: A 24-year-old employee of a pharma firm allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her office in Bowenpally on Thursday.

M. Samatha, a native of Warangal, who was working at Goalsy Pharma, hanged herself as she could not bear the alleged harassment of her employer Mr Srinivas Rao. Her family members said that though he was already married, Mr Rao had forced her to marry him and had been harassing her constantly.

On Wednesday evening, when only Samatha and Rao were at the office, she locked herself in a room and hanged herself. Rao entered the room after breaking a windowpane and brought her down but she was dead. Police has taken Rao into custody for questioning.

Goalsy Pharma had three members, Srinivas Rao, his partner Ashok and Samatha, who would manage office administration.

Police found that Rao was on a call on Thursday evening when Samatha went into a room and latched it. Rao grew suspicious when she did not come out after 20 minutes and knocked on the door. When there was no response, he peeped through a window and found her hanging from the ceiling fan. “He broke the window pane and entered the room and brought her down, but she was dead. Neighbours who heard him screaming rushed in and alerted the police” said Mr N. Suresh, sub inspector from Bowenpally Police station.

Samatha’s family members alleged that Rao was her colleague at Cipla Pharma two years ago and she had left the job as she couldn’t bear his harassment.

“Without knowing that Srinivas owned this company, she joined. But he started harassing her again and forced her to marry him,” said Samatha’s brother-in-law Mr J. Santosh, blaming Mr Rao for her death.

A case for suspicious death has been registered and Rao is being interrogated. Mr M. Samar, the younger brother of Samatha, called her on her phone and a cop answered the call and gave him the news of her suicide. He collapsed on hearing the news of her death. Samatha, the younger daughter of her parents Mr Satyanarayana and Ms Sarala, who are farmers, had completed her Masters in Chemistry and was working to support the family.
