Hyderabad: Verdict put off in Vijay Mallya cheque case

The court reserved its order on pronouncing the sentence as the GMR counsel could not produce the correct address of Mallya.

Hyderabad: The III Special Magistrate Court at Nampally on Monday postponed its verdict on two cheque bounces cases filed against industrialist Vijay Mallya and Kingfisher Airlines by GMR International Airport to August 4. The court reserved its order on pronouncing the sentence as the GMR counsel could not produce the correct address of Mallya.

On June 6, while hearing the case, the court directed GMR officials to furnish the correct address of Mallya for issuing warrants after the Mumbai police filed a petition in May stating that the warrants issued earlier could not be executed at the address of the accused in Mumbai as it was sealed by a bank and as there were no Kingfisher officials at the premises. The Mumbai police returned the warrants as they could not be executed.

During the hearing on the quantum of sentence in June, GMR counsel G. Ashok Reddy had insisted that the court pass the sentence against Mallya, citing provisions of CrPC and saying that the court has the power to impose a sentence even in the absence of the accused.

Earlier, the court had convicted Mallya and others under the Negotiable Instruments Act and issued warrants directing the police to produce Mallya before it after two cheques of '50 lakh each issued by them bounced.

The GMR counsel said 17 cases have been filed against Kingfisher Airlines in courts over an outstanding amount of '22.5 crore which it owes to GMR and the cases are in different stages of trial.
