Bengaluru: Sketch helps police nab murder accused

He was absconding for three months after killing hotel employee.

BENGALURU: The Kamakshipalya police have arrested a 30-year-old man, who was absconding for three months after committing a murder. The accused has been identified as Veeresh Maddera alias Kencha, who hails from Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district.

Police said that a murder was reported in Shyam Upahar hotel in Rajajinagar Industrial Area on March 6. The deceased, Nagaraja alias Hanumantharayappa, 40, was working at the hotel and the hotel owner Anandram had filed a complaint in this connection. When an investigation was launched, it came to light that Veeresh, who was also working in the same hotel, was absconding after the murder.

“Veeresh was earlier working in a hotel in Majestic bus station and had joined Shyam Upahar in January second week. The owner of the hotel did not have his photo and address and the only clue was he was speaking in North Karnataka dialect. With the help of artists, a sketch of Veeresh was prepared as his colleagues described him. The sketch was pasted at bus stations, railway stations and other public places in various taluks in Ballari and Koppal districts. Later, the police got information that the sketch matched to a person in Hosahalli village in Gangavathi taluk,” the police said.

“Based on the information, the police team traced Veeresh’s mother and relatives. But his mother told the police that he had left the village two years ago and was working elsewhere. She also said that his wife and children were living in Toranagallu in Ballari. Further investigations revealed that he had joined a group of shepherds and kept changing places. Based on this information, the police questioned several shepherds and finally traced Veeresh and arrested him from a hilly region in Toranagallu in Sandur taluk of Ballari,” the police added.

When interrogated, the accused confessed that he smashed Nagaraj’s head with a grinding stone as he refused to lend Rs 500 to the accused, as he wanted to visit his village. Police are further investigating the case.
