Uber driver attacked in Kovalam

The local police took him to General Hospital where he is recuperating.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In yet another attack on online taxis, a Uber driver was injured allegedly with iron rods and his vehicle damaged in Kovalam on Saturday night. The driver was identified as Anu S, 34 of Mudavanmugal. He was going to Hotel Leela at Kovalam from Vivanta by Taj at Vellar after picking up two tourists. When the car began moving, it was pelted with stones on the main road. The driver stopped the vehicle and the tourists ran away. The assailants then allegedly beat the taxi driver with an iron rod. He was injured on his arms, neck and stomach. The local police took him to General Hospital where he is recuperating.

“The assailants shouted that online taxis should not seen in the area,” said Mr Noushad. The Kovalam police said one of the suspects had been identified and the whole gang would be arrested. “The assailants are local cab drivers ,” said a police officer. Similar attacks had earlier taken place at the Airport, Menamkulam and Central Railway station. At Menamkulam, three Uber cars were damaged on the same day. There was a decline in such incidents as the city police had said that they would recommend cancellation of permits of all autorickshaw, taxi drivers who attacked online taxi vehicles.
