Karnataka: Activists laud ban on politicos with criminal records

The Election Commission has proposed a lifetime ban on MPs and MLAs convicted in criminal cases.

Bengaluru: Former MP Kodandaramaiah welcomed the big step by Supreme Court in weeding out politicians with criminal record and Election Commission’s decision to ban convicted politicians from contesting elections.

Mr Kodandaramaiah told the media on Saturday, “The Election Commission has proposed a lifetime ban on MPs and MLAs convicted in criminal cases. Even the apex court has asked the central government to match its commitment to decriminalise politics by setting up special courts to try pending cases against politicians and that too in a time-bound manner."

In 2013, the Supreme Court directed all High Courts to decide on the conviction of public representatives within a year. Despite the apex court order, HCs were not following it and even the SC has not taken any action, he said. Freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy and other were present at the press meet.
