Secunderabad: Ramya had joined St Ann's High School on Friday

As per their request, she was allowed to sit in Class IV on Friday.

Hyderabad: P. Ramya, who is brain dead after being hit by a drunk driver, would have been studying in Class IV at St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad.

Ramya, the elder daughter of Mr Venkatramana and Ms Radhika, had completed Class III from St Paul’s High School, Hyderguda and was to join St. Ann’s. On Friday morning her parents brought her to the school. And though admissions had closed 15 days ago, the school management accepted her and the parents agreed to complete formalities on Saturday.

As per their request, she was allowed to sit in Class IV on Friday. “I spoke to the girl. Though I can’t say much about her, she seemed smart and active,” said Sr. Treesa, principal of St Ann’s High School.

After the accident on Friday, Ramya was first admitted to NIMS, from where she was shifted to Care Hospital. “She continues to be on ventilator support. Doctors are monitoring her in the Neurological ICU,” said Dr Gopi Krishna, deputy medical superintendent.

Doctors added that her condition had worsened on Saturday and that brain stem reflexes were absent. Since it was her first day in the new school, Ramya’s grandfather Mr Madhusudan Rao, and her uncles Rajesh and Ramesh came to pick her up. While they were coming down the Punjagutta flyover, their car was hit by a vehicle, driven by engineering student Shraveel, who was drunk. Rajesh died on the spot and Ramya, who was sitting in the rear, fractured her pelvic bone and slipped into shock. Ramya’s mother Radhika, grandfather Madhusudhan Rao and uncle Ramesh also sustained serious injuries.

Shraveel’s five friends, who were in his car, were injured. Shraveel was arrested under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sent to remand.
