Hyderabad: Boy dies after tonsil surgery goes wrong

Pratima Hospitals CEO Dr Sunil Sepuri said, “There are complications due to anaesthesia and it happens in one out of 1,000 cases.

Hyderabad: Four-and-a-half-year-old K. Manivardhan Yadav could not surmount the complications after a tonsillitis surgery and died early on Wednesday.
Family members protested outside Pratima Hospital where the operation was carried out and a police case was also registered at Kacheguda station.

Manivardhan was admitted on March 22 for tonsillitis operation. He was given anaesthesia and the surgery was carried out. But there was a reflex by the lungs due to anaesthesia. This resulted in less oxygen supply leading to brain injury.

Pratima Hospitals CEO Dr Sunil Sepuri said, “There are complications due to anaesthesia and it happens in one out of 1,000 cases. The boy was evaluated before surgery and as parameters were normal he was taken in. He was obese, weighing 40 kg. There was no problem in the surgery. But the body had a reflex action due to which there was spasm in the lungs leading to less supply of oxygen.”

His father K. Venkatesh Yadav explained, “They brought him on the ventilator after four hours of the surgery and that was shocking. We didn’t understand what went wrong. It was supposed to be a simple operation of tonsils.”

The child was in critical care in the hospital and an MRI was also done to assess the brain damage. But the injury was acute and the child succumbed in the early hours on Wednesday. Angry relatives protested against the ENT surgeon and also demanded that the other doctors be produced. Finally, a police case was registered.
