Serenity Foundation death turns out to be murder

HYDERABAD: Trimulgherry police investigating the suspicious death of a youngster in Serenity Foundation, a private rehabilitation centre, found that he was brutally murdered by inmates at the centre. The accused stabbed him with a ball pen in his throat and then removed the blade from a pencil sharpener and slashed his throat with it, killing him on the spot.

Police arrested six youngsters, all of whom were addicted to Ganja and are undergoing treatment in the centre.

The 20-year-old victim, who was undergoing treatment in the centre for addiction to Ganja, was found dead in a washroom in the centre on January 26. Based on the broken window panes found by his body, police suspected that he died by suicide.

However, during the postmortem examination, police found the death was not suicidal and it was a clear homicide. Based on the findings, police started questioning the centre staff and also other inmates who were also undergoing treatment for drug addiction.

Police found that an argument broke out between the victim and the accused, following which the accused persons forced the victim into one of the washrooms. Quoting the accused, police said the victim and the accused had a scuffle in the bathroom, during which the window panes broke and the glass pieces were shattered all over, giving an impression that the victim died by suicide.

The accused admitted that they first stabbed him with a ball pen and later removed blade from a pencil sharpener available at the centre and slashed his throat using it and killed him.

While the accused were produced before the court and sent to judicial remand two days ago. Prison authorities were also directed to be put under observation and provide necessary treatment.
