Telangana: Kids to get tips on cyber safety

The police will seek assistance from IT companies, IIIT Hyderabad and cyber crime units.

Hyderabad: If all goes well, schools and higher educational institutions in Telangana will have cyber crime experts and police officials giving tips on cyber crime safety. The police is planning to organise awareness programmes in towns and cities where phishing, online abuses cyber stalking, bank, lottery and matrimonial frauds are on the rise.

“A few cyber security firms have come forward to take up classes in association with the Telangana police. Soon we will chalk out a plan to conduct the classes. Focus will be on schools and higher educational institutions in the city, including Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda,” said a senior officer from the Telangana police.

“Children and the youth need to be cautioned about the growing menace as they are the easy targets. Students in cities are attracted to the internet due to the tech-savvy environment they live in,” said the official. The police will seek assistance from IT companies, IIIT Hyderabad and cyber crime units. Along with students, teachers also will attend the awareness programme. The programme gains significance in view of the online radicalisation of the youth by terror groups. Mr M. Mahendar Reddy, director-general of police, has said that fighting cyber crime will be one of the top priorities of the state police. The police is already conducting programmes for women in association with various organisations.
