Video: Teenage girls reveal why they love their dark skin so much

Being dark-skinned can be tough if you live in a society that looks at having fair, light skin as the beauty ideal for women. The in-your-face marketing tactics of cosmetic companies that sell their products with the promise to ‘lighten’ you up can give a huge blow to the self-esteem of any young impressionable girl. In this video, Kranti, an NGO that empowers young women from Mumbai’s red-light areas asks a few of them what they love about their dusky complexion.

The gutsy girls declared that they believe that their skin colour is a source of strength for them rather than an obstacle towards the path to happiness. They even called out big brands that make profit off the insecurities of women by reinforcing stereotypes about what beauty and success for women should look like.

Let’s hope that all young women realise their true worth and never bow down to ridiculous expectations no matter what.
