Artifacts destroyed to find treasure'

However, they say, most of the excavated materials were destroyed by the locals, in a bid to find 'treasure'.

KOZHIKODE: During the recent excavations made near Valanchery in Malappuram, the History department of Calicut University had found scripts similar to Harappan culture from burial urns dated more than 2000 years ago. However, they say, most of the excavated materials were destroyed by the locals, in a bid to find 'treasure'. The excavations were made in November and now, more researchers have come up with links similar to that of the inscriptions in the Harappan civilisation, according to historian Dr M.R. Raghava Warrier.

Dr P. Sivadasan, head of the department of History, at Calicut university, who led the excavations, told this newspaper that there should be more awareness among the public, so that they do not damage the historical evidences, presuming that they hold treasures. "The pictorial scripts, found inside the burial urns (Nannangadi) are similar to those found in Saindhava script. Similar ones were found after excavations in Thindivanam and Coimbatore. More studies need to be carried out in this regard," said Dr Sivadasan. He also pointed out the similarities with that of the inscriptions found in Edakkal caves, Wayanad.
