Dance therapy

Kitty parties in the city have undergone a transformation, with several women now turning to dance for camaraderie.

Often termed ‘therapeutic’, it’s no secret that dancing can aid in the physical and emotional functioning of the body. Taking a cue from this, many women from the city have taken to dance, instead of indulging in idle gossip sessions at kitty parties.

“We are all middle-aged women with a passion for dancing. We might not be trained but we just want to enjoy the moves,” says Sashi Nahata, creator of one such dance group. It all started about six months ago, when they were bored of just sitting and gossiping at a kitty party. “It was not productive enough. Now, at these meetings, we dance without any inhibition,” adds Sashi.

Her close friend, hairstylist Laila Khan, who is a great dancer as per her friends, says, “Sashi initiated the formation of the group, as we wanted to do less talking and more great work. And what can be more exciting than dancing, where we get to burn calories as well. It’s a win-win situation.”

The group, comprising of eight to ten members, generally meets once in 15 days in the afternoon for a dance therapy session. “First, we check whose house is free, and then we dance like no one is watching,” adds Sashi. According to another member, Sunita Guggar, these sessions help them to de-stress.

Dancer Kavita Golecha, who has also come up with another group on similar lines, says, “One of my friends, Srimani came up with the idea and I just helped her to put it together. The love for music and dance binds us.”

Laila adds, “We hire professional instructors only to learn something new, otherwise we just tune into whatever comes to our mind and groove to the beats.”
