JOB-smacked & loving it!

These Bengaluru professionals, who have relocated from other cities, talk about what keeps them hooked to their work, and the city.

Getting employed and living in Bengaluru is anything but easy, especially for non-natives. In most cases, young people do not come to Bengaluru as they have gotten a dream job, but are here to try and live a dream in a metro, and battle through its traffic.

Bengaluru-based professionals tells us what turns deadlines, over-time schedules and mundane Mondays a magical affair. Anand Reghuraj who works as team leader (marketing) at a distance learning centre says that the emotional support from colleagues and the ambience inside the office is the motivation that keeps him going. “I have a very understanding team at my workplace and they keep me enthusiastic in good and bad times. Also, as part of my work, I help students and working professionals choose the right MBA programme which invariably helps them settle down with a good job. Most times, our guidance turns out to be a life-changing affair. The feeling that I have contributed in changing someone’s life forever is priceless,’’ says Anand.

Meanwhile, opportunities for multi-tasking seem to be the stimulus for people who work in start-ups. According to Rituja Bakshi, who works as an associate category manager at a fashion retail, meeting new people and innovating is the most intriguing factor about her job. “Being in a start-up, you have to be on your feet always, figure things from scratch and deep dive into every aspect. The best part is my profile and my interests do not limit me to only one role; one moment I am a fashionista working on different styles and analysing fashion trends, next I am a pro business analyst scouting through excel sheets, next I am a negotiator discussing commercials with different brands and the list goes on. Even on days of pulling all nighters, or when there is a launch, the stress levels might be high but the heart and the mind are aligned: I am doing exactly what I love,’’ says Rituja.

For Snigdha Kulshreshtha, who works in a small finance bank, the positive impact that she is able to make on the lives of those in need is one of the aspects that checks fatigue from setting in. “No matter how much work needs to be put in, at the end of the day I can go home feeling good about the fact that my job is serving a greater purpose. Also, my job encourages me to travel and for an avid traveller like me, that is a dream come true. Above all, what appeals to me the most is the work culture where work doesn’t really feel like something you have to do, but something you want to do,’’ she said.

As for Arjun Ravi, currently working as a quality analyst in an IT firm, the deadlines and competition gives him the spark that gets him going. “This is my first job and the corporate work culture makes me push my limits every single day. It makes me smarter and prepares me for life. I love the feeling that I am on my own and managing everything quite well,’’ Arjun said.
