Pastor stole the show

Pastor Curry became an instant hit on social media.

One of the most anticipated weddings of the decade took place on May 19 and it was larger than life, as expected. But the most unexpected was the presence of an all black choir and an African-American pastor, Michael Curry. People gushed about how Megan Markle paid a tribute to her roots by calling them in as a part of her family, who are black, could not be there.

The choir was a delight. But the show stealer was Pastor Curry. His reverberating speech — at least some thought so before it went on and on — just didn’t seem to stop. He started off by quoting Martin Luther King, the civil rights icon. “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.”

This was just the beginning. His extempore speech, addressing the guests as “brothers and sisters”, also highlighted social justice issues, LGBT rights and more.

The Royal family was taken aback. The Queen wasn’t amused, Prince William was seen cracking up and Kate Middleton couldn’t keep a straight face. Princess Beatrice and Eugenie were both seen giggling.

Sky News journalist Mark Austin reportedly said: “Lovely moment as the preacher takes the Royals to the edge of their comfort zone”.

Pastor Curry became an instant hit on social media. Twitter had some fantastic memes and responses.

Amen Bishop Curry. The royal family is shook. The man behind the bishop...is he alive or awake? #RoyalWedding

Lol- yes Zara Phillips did look bored but in her defense she's about 8mths pregnant. So it's safe to say hard wooded seats, 3/4in heals, and long sermons (no matter how good) are not her back (and bladder's) friends at the moment. #royalwedding

Couldn’t they have found a nice English pastor?? This love/lerv-energy-talk is starting to annoy me...

Agree totally.Too much about all of God’s children and love is the way and a new Heaven and a New Earth and a New World and a new family. The Look on the faces of Prince Charles and Camilla is a give away. And now he’s talking about fire. Good Lord in Heaven. Make him stop soon.

Wish I had overs in ‘how many times this guy would say love’ in this wedding. He went on and on...

Steph Whitaker@CosIsaysodammit
I thought it was a lovely message but way too long and a over performed. I think some of the Royal family behaved very badly opening sniggering at him, especially the York girls

Watching the royals trying to keep a straight face whilst listening to the American preacher is what I live for #royalwedding

A black reverend preaching to British royalty about the resilience of faith during slavery is 10000000% not what I thought I was waking up for, the royal wedding is good.

Wadzanai@Mama__Africa
African American Reverend, Michael Curry, quoted MLK and made reference to slavery at the #RoyalWedding, in front of the colonisers themselves. A black choir sang Stand By Me. Someone ululated during the vows. I told myself I wouldn't watch it, but here I am...

Bishop Michael Curry really lit my whole heart up with his message. He was ready to do a whole sermon and I was ready for it. And then #MyPeople came through and blessed the world with #StandByMe. #RoyalWedding. Lord thank you for all of this beauty this early in the morning.

If you really think rambling on for 10 minutes about fire was adding 'life' to the ceremony, I feel sorry for you.
