The underrated four on Netflix

What does one do when popular shows on popular over-the-top platforms do not keep up with viewer expectations?

There comes a time when the most popular TV shows fail to live up to viewers’ expectations. In 2019,the big guns of shows, such as Game of Thrones (GOT), Suits and The Big Bang Theory, turned serious duds in ratings and, well, viewer expectations. However, Netflix still has many critically acclaimed shows that don’t always ace on the popularity index. They may seem underrated but are definitely the ones to keep an eye out for.

Peaky Blinders (Crime drama)
If you are a fan of murder mysteries and thrillers, with maybe a funny bone on the side, one show you must tune into this one. Having received an 8.8 on IMDb, this British crime drama series is primarily set in Birmingham and revolves around the Shelby crime family and its leader Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy).

The series, now in its fourth season, is about a rather volatile time in European history. AtishPadhy, a student from Christ (Deemed to be University) is completely hooked on to Peaky Blinders. ”It is about social change, honour cultures and an antihero, and it is the perfect drama to get hooked on to,” says Atish.

Mindhunters (Psychological thrillers)
That’s another Netflix series working wonders. Still running its first season, the series, with an 8.5 IMDb rating, brings to the audience a truly engaging crime-detective show, focusing on the FBI’s attempts to catch criminals by understanding their psychology. Directed by Oscar nominee David Fincher, Mindhunters is especially a treat for anyone interested in the subject of psychology. AakashHari, a student of psychology, thinks it is one of the best psychological-crime shows in the market. “It leaves behind a gripping effect on its audienceand it’s hard not to wait to see what’s coming next,” adds Aakash.

Bojack Horseman (Humour)
Crime dramas aren’t the only genre in which Netflix shines. If you hope to have a good laugh over some adult humour, Bojack Horseman is definitely a show to look forward to. This animated show well into its sixth season, features a humanoid horse, Bojack Horseman, who loathes himself beyond imagination and has the capacity to drink more than, well, the Irish! Witty and well written, this is storytelling at its peak. One of the fans of the show, Kevin J Thomas, who is an intern at Radio Active, says “This is a black comedy and satire in the show makes me laugh so much, I am in tears. And honestly, I think it’s the kind of show that will make anyone laugh at a funeral.”

Our Planet (Docuseries)
Lovers of great video production, cinematography and awareness about nature should not miss Our Planet. The series has received an outstanding 9.6 on IMDb. Many viewers initially thought that a majority of the shots were computer-generated imagery. But surprise, surprise! The team that produced the series took over 4 years to complete it and had more than 600 crew members shooting in 50 different countries. Devoid of opinions and merely presenting facts,it showcases some of the issues need to be addressed. “Our Planet is one of the finest shows on Netflix, bringingalive the beauty of this planet we call home, while subtly leaving behind a tale of how close we are to destroying it all,” says Madappa PS, a volunteer at FEED.
