Pretty Please? Say No!

Experts say do not blindly follow instructions by YouTubers, rather research and later proceed.

Gone are the days when we would sit next to our mothers and copy them. These days, instead of our mothers, YouTubers with their mesmerising and flawless beauty influence us with their routines. While all of this is nice to watch, the products and techniques they use may not go well with our skin. Blindly following these routines will in fact have an adverse affect on your skin. We speak to experts as well as people who have experimented with these videos and find out more.

Raina Joseph, an entrepreneur has actually been waiting a long time to share her experience. She adds, “It was a makeup hack for a party. I basically followed the entire routine and then I had to dunk my face into a bowl of ice cold water. Upon doing that, I could see 400 rupees wasted and floating in the water. It was a total waste! The second one was the curling of your eye lashes after heating that instrument with a lighter. I did this too and I had to wait for 1 month for my eye lashes to grow back because I burnt them!”

Staying natural is the easiest way to ensure that you looks flawless. “There is absolutely nothing wrong in staying authentic and original. No amount of make up can alter what was naturally given to you nor can any amount of plastic surgery can bring back the natural beauty that you lost.”

Nikita Reddy, a makeup artist suggests that a proper research be done before you look at products and beauty routines. She shares, “Its important to determine your skin type. Do a thorough research and narrow down the products. Once this step is done, then search for a Youtube video that utilises your products. Most of the videos we see are sponsored by beauty brands. Pick a product that suits your skin. The one common thing that we can follow is cleansing, tonning and moisturising. Fit this into your routine with your products. The side effects are - you will shell out a lot of money, you experience rashes, redness, acne etc.”

Dermatologist Chytra Anand shares that wrong products will adversely affect you skin. She shares, “Every skin is different and you must get a personalised skin and makeup regime. Get the products tested on your skin. It’s human mentality to get impressed by youtubers. When they have a big following, they get a celebrity status. We tend to blindly follow what they do. It causes more harm than good. You will experience skin reactions, breakouts and dryness, post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.”

Anika C, a psychologist shares, “Humans learn to adapt to culture and their environment by imitation. Hence YouTubers have an edge over people in this regard as they conduce imitation and learning. Steering clear from this is to bring about self awareness n mindfulness about ones own body. Decision making capacity of an individual to make an appropriate choice. Though there is pressure it is up to each person to give in to it or not.”
