Capital runs for a wonderful cause

The fifth edition of TrivandRun intends to raise funds to donate to the RCC.

They have been running for five years now. They will run again and more people are going to join them. The fifth edition of TrivandRun will happen on January 13 and the people organising the event are on their toes, getting things together, getting celebrities and officials to endorse this run that would raise funds for needy patients in Thiruvananthapuram. Save A Rupee, Spread A Smile (SARSAS), a city-based charity organisation, has in the past editions raised around Rs 40 lakh for the treatment of poor patients in the Regional Cancer Centre and the Medical College. This year, SARSAS volunteers are raising funds to donate to the RCC and also to spread cancer awareness among the public.

“We are extremely thankful to Thiruvananthap-uram, which is our hometown too, for running for a wonderful cause,” says Deepa Ananthapadmanabhan, president of SARSAS. “Every year, old and new volunteers taking part in TrivandRun remember to join us, and bring more people. The number has only gone up every passing year. We are expecting more than 2,000 people to join this time. There will be family runners that include mother, daughter and grandmother, young runners from colleges, and IT professionals from Technopark doing the various runs,” she says.

There are three categories – a 10-km endurance run, a 2-km fun run and a corporate relay (5X2km). The event begins at 5 am at the Kowdiar Golf Club. Winners and runners-up will be awarded cash prizes. There will be certificates of participation for those doing the endurance run and trophies for maximum turnout from colleges, schools and corporates. Registration fees for the public is Rs 200 and for students, it is Rs 100.

“All the money would go to charity. We are also using all the sponsor money for charity,” Deepa says. “We are very happy to be the title partner for this unique event in an effort to raise awareness about cancer and also give back to the community by helping fund needy patients at RCC,” said Julius Lim, SilkAir’s Manager, Thiruvananthapuram. The event will end at the Golf Club with a dance and music show, from 8 am to 10.30 am.

Celebrities like magician Gopinath Muthukad, city police commissioner P. Prakash, district collector Dr K. Vasuki, actors Anusree, Saranya Mohan and Ahaana Krishnan, director Rajasenan, have endorsed the event and given their support to the cause.
