Life of a desi hudugi

The Kundapur girl sings about being single in a society where the pressure to get married never ceases...

Chic, talented and go-getter, songstress Prajna Shetty is out with her first single titled ‘Hudgeer Jeevana’. The video, which was released two days ago on youtube, shows the small-town hudugi singing about what it’s like to be an unmarried 20-something girl in India. Talking about the track, Prajna says, “Hudgeer Jeevana is a funny depiction of the challenges faced by an unmarried girl in our society and how she’s still trying to find herself amidst all the pressure she faces. This is pretty much the story of 90 per cent of the ladies around me who are constantly under pressure to get married, but want to buy more time for themselves to follow their passion.” Her video has already garnered 11,000 hits since its release.

Hailing from the coastal town of Kundapur, Prajna did engineering in NMAMIT Nitte before moving to Bengaluru to find herself an IT job five years ago. “Apart from being an engineer, I also teach yoga at Cult and work on my music compositions side by side. I always had the passion for music, but never thought I had the talent to come this far as I never received any formal classical training in music. After I came to Bengaluru, I really wanted to continue my music journey in some way, so I started uploading covers of my favourite songs on YouTube. I had original melodies in my head which I did not know how to express so I started learning the guitar. One thing led to another, and here I am! One quote that always inspires me is ‘never die with the music still in you,” says the crooner. Interestingly, Prajna’s cover of the song Closer received a comment on Instagram from the original artistes The Chainsmokers themselves!

As for the future, the ambitious singer wants to compose pop and pop rock songs in Kannada. “I want to put out all the melodies in my head in the form of a story. I have realised I love narrating stories through songs or at least have an inspiring message behind every song,” says Prajna, who’s a fan of artistes like Taylor Swift, Charlie Puth, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.
