IoT - Mainstream lifestyle choice

An interesting read on how IoT has become the favourite of millennials.

Imagine an Orwellian world where all your gadgets and gizmos are friends. They interact with each other and ally to make your life more manageable. This world has emerged from the pages of science fiction into the real world with IoT making the rounds. IoT is part of the long legacy of innovations made at the behest of improving human productivity, finding its best expression in smart homes. It has synchronised the working of geysers, air conditioners, fans and televisions by allowing users to remotely control them with their smartphones.

Millennials- the movers and shakers

The human consciousness is always on the lookout to optimize its time and potential and millennials are no exception. Surveys have shown that millennials are likely to pay twenty per cent more for a home if it has smart technology. Having grown up around technology, they are more receptive to features like electronic locks, mobile-controlled security systems, and voice-activated assistants. They are seeking to automate their everyday activities to save up on time and effort. Furthermore, they are also very mindful about their impact on the environment. Integrating smart appliances into their homes not only eases their day to day living but also helps them mitigate their impact on the environment by increasing energy efficiency.

Motor your way to energy efficiency

Motors function as intermediaries that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. They’re the heart of many home appliances like refrigerators, fans, air conditioners and washing machines. Therefore, increasing motor efficiency can significantly mitigate the global energy crisis.

In tropical countries like India, fans, air conditioners and air coolers are the bands of superheroes that wage our battle against the unforgiving sun. They run for hours on end without a break, making Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors apt for them.

The total consumption of power by the ceiling fans alone amounts to 6 per cent, recording a higher margin than the combined usage of the TVs and fridge. With more than 30 million units of ceiling fans being sold per annum adding to the established base of 250 million units, fans are part of the reason India is at the forefront of energy consumption! Even at its most modest estimation, if every new ceiling fan sold has BLDC technology, India could potentially save 2800 GWh of energy every year.

BLDC fans generate the same amount of airflow with lesser energy. They can save up to 65 per cent electricity in comparison to ordinary induction motor-based fans because they eliminate losses that result from the mechanical friction of brushes. They also help consumers cut down on their utility bills by slashing up to Rs 1500-2000 on each fan every year.

Lush is the new rush.

Objects have always been markers of social status. Interestingly, utility products like fans have become aspirational too! Millennials are now willing to shell out more money on products that offer them pride of ownership. The low heating feature of BLDC fans has made it an easy sell on premium counters because it allows for better design and IoT integration.

Aesthetically, they aren’t restricted to using metal bodies. Using plastic variants in the casing has made them a more attractive buy for customers. Since BLDC fans use electronic circuits several features like sleep mode and timer mode can be added to increase efficiency. They can be designed to detect ambient temperature and regulate speed or synchronize with the air conditioner. They’re also compatible with home automation systems like Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant.

Busting a few IoT myths

Many assume that owning smart products is a privilege that pinches pockets. However, appliances like BLDC Gorilla fans help customers recover costs in the second year of ownership itself by slashing electricity bills by more than half. Smart appliances not only automate mundane routine tasks for their users but also saves their pennies in the long run. This has made IoT a smart lifestyle choice for millennials.
