Flower power the Dutch way!

Sandalwood actress Teena Ponappa shares her experience travelling across Netherlands...

Flowers are in abundance in Amsterdam. The Bloemenmarkt was one of the best things I saw. It is a floating market and it is one of the largest in the world. Auctions were conducted here and tonnes of flowers were shipped to places across the world. If visiting Rotterdam, The Kinderdijk Windmills is a must see.

The people in Amsterdam are extremely welcoming and warm. My mother who travelled with me walked away with a bouquet when we visited one of the many flower markets. I also noticed how clean the surrounds are, and the extra care the locals take not to litter. They also discard litter dropped by other people!

You must buy one of the replicas of the Kinderdijk Windmills. In Amsterdam, I bought a lot of boots, trench coats and hats. If you are into masquerade masks, I would suggest visiting maskshopvenice.com which offers an array of masks you can choose from.

The best way to travel in Amsterdam is to buy tickets to the electric trams. Since the city has a lot of water bodies, ferries can also be used to get across and are a beautiful peek into the water front homes across the city. You can also hire bikes, use buses or the metro.

I went to Amsterdam in November and December. Do ensure you pack enough warm clothes, and don’t forget to take a beer bicycle ride through the city, and walk along the waterways. They are beautiful.
