It's complicated: Divorce? It's the start of good times

All is not over. Here's why a split is just the start of a wiser, more fun, and a better new you.

Your marriage — that set of promises wrapped in much love and topped off with romance — is over. The spark’s missing and the snoring’s no longer adorable. It’s time to call it... to take it behind the barn and shoot it in the head. But feeling shattered after a divorce is plain silly. Remember, both of you ejected to save yourself. In fact, your newly-single status today signals the start of a brighter, better, wiser future. You’re absolutely done making compromises.

The examples are all around you. Being married to Mick Jagger was troublesome for Jerry Hall. She had to deal with not just a self-obsessed rockstar, but a stingy man with a roving eye. But look at husband Number Two! Rupert Murdoch is arguably one of the most powerful people on the planet — and happy to be faithful. And for Murdoch, who is well into his 80s, it’s fourth time lucky with Hall. Just look the two up and all you see are cheerful faces.

Meanwhile, Ayesha Mukherjee, a 40-something, divorced mother of two is now Mrs Shikhar Dhawan. Not much is known about hubby number one, but she and her two daughters have found much happiness in her cricketer hubby. Then, there’s Dinesh Karthik. After an unhappy first marriage — which made headlines — love came knocking in the form of gorgeous Dipika Pallikal — squash champ, extremely successful and overall, a fantastic human being.

More recently, Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu tied the knot. For him, it’s the third time he’s been out shopping for the ring. Yes, there were allegations and much bad blood but Grover made it through all of that to love and commit again. These stories are emerging from our neighbourhoods too. A divorcee in her late 40s found love in a widowed investment banker, who was seeking a companion — it’s almost a soul match.

Another person, who was dumped by her husband and kids, is now living a life filled with love and mutual respect with a newly-single businessman. She is gentle and warm and he was longing for love — it’s magic now. Wondering why rounds two and three often work out? The answer’s experience.

You are now wiser, more emotionally stable. You can handle the in-laws, the house, petty fights and sensitive situations. You learn to sift through quarrels and situations to uncover the person beneath — the one you fell in love with. In time, you just learn to prioritise better.

Because when a relationship ends — you may not see it immediately but you’ll soon realise the flaws with the decisions that had contributed to the split. You then inquire, improve and improvise, making it so much more wonderful for someone to spend a happily ever after with you.
