Five misconceptions about sex which even smart people fall for

Porn as well as unverified online content has left a lot of people with bizarre notions and anxieties.

The rise of the internet has also led to an increasing interest in sex as people are trying to find answers to a lot of questions. But this has also led to a large number of misconceptions which at times end up being harmful when it comes to awareness about sex.

Porn as well as unverified online content has left a lot of people with bizarre notions and anxieties which have only replaced myths that existed due to lack of information. Here are a few ideas which even the smartest often fall for.

1. Sex may give you a heart attack

Although people across the globe seek ways to get more action between the sheets in their life, heart patients seem to be cautious about having sex. But research suggests that they don’t need to worry since only 0.7 percent of heart attack patients said they had sex within an hour of a stroke.

While experts do advise taking things slow a few weeks after a heart attack, having sex after that shouldn’t cause any problems. It can actually be counted as part of an exercise regime for heart patients.

2. Standing on the head after sex increases chances of pregnancy

While a lot of people try different ways to conceive, this bizarre idea is probably a myth. In fact lying down may prove to be better at increasing chances of getting pregnant.

A study found that women who lay flat for 15 minutes had a 50 percent higher chance of pregnancy than those who got up immediately. Meanwhile putting a pillow under the back and lifting the pelvis a bit may help; there is no need to stand on your head.

3. Women don’t get pregnant on their period

This one is something a large number of people believe but there is no such time when women don’t get pregnant. A good egg released during ovulation has a life span of four to five days and a healthy sperm can fertilise for up to four days.

4. Headaches as a reason to avoid sex

Headaches have been used as an excuse to not have sex by a lot of people, but turns out sex can actually help. For women orgasms can provide relief from headaches and a study found that more than half of people suffering from migraines noticed an improvement in symptoms after having sex.

In case of men one in five found that the headache was completely gone by the time they finished. Sex causes release of endorphins which are regarded as the natural painkillers of the body.

5. Urinating before sex keeps STI at bay

Urinary Tract Infection occurs when the bladder is infected by bacteria that enter through the urethra. While most people are asked to pee before sex to avoid this, a leading urologist says it’s the most common cause of post-coital urinary tract infection.

Bacteria can get pushed into the urethra during sex but not urinating before sex makes sure that there is more stored in the bladder. This raises chances of the bacteria getting flushed when a person urinates after having sex, thus avoiding UTI.
