Kerala transman gives birth to baby, first case in India

The couple, who had announced pregnancy recently, declined to reveal the gender identity of the new-born

Thiruvananthapuram: In a first of its kind instance, a transgender couple gave birth to a baby at a government hospital in Kozhikode district of Kerala on Wednesday.

The couple, who had announced pregnancy recently, declined to reveal the gender identity of the new-born. They are understood to have conveyed that they would not like to go public on the gender at the moment.

The baby was born through Caesarean Section at 9.30 am at the Kozhikode Government Medical College, according to Ziya Paval, one of the trans partners told a news agency.

According to her, both the baby and her partner were doing well.

Ziya Paval recently took to Instagram and announced that Zahhad was eight months pregnant. Paval and Zahhad have been living together for the past three years.

Meanwhile, the birth of a baby has created a wave of joy among the transgender community. Many of them took to social media expressing happiness and excitement. They shared congratulatory messages and emojis of love and happiness.

In a Facebook post, Adam Harry, the country's first transgender pilot said he has never felt such happiness in his life. "The baby came....both Zahhad and the baby are healthy. Ziya is waiting outside excitedly," he said soon after the news of the baby's birth.

Sheethal Shyam, a trans gender activist, shared the pictures of the trans couple in her social media accounts to convey her happiness. "That child is born," she said in her WhatsApp status.

The trans couple had recently disclosed that they were undergoing hormone therapy to change their genders but halted the procedure to facilitate the birth of the baby. Zahhad, who was transitioning to become a man, had stalled it to conceive a baby.

Earlier the couple had planned to adopt a baby. But later they dropped the plan in view of the stringent legal procedures involved in adoption.

Finally, they decided to have their own biological child.

The medical college authorities assured that breast milk would be made available for the baby from the milk bank of the hospital.
