Bengaluru: Black kites shriek for help owing to high temperatures

Wildlife rescue centres in the city are overwhelmed with rescue calls and have treated over 300 black kites suffering from dehydration.

Bengaluru: Many urban wildlife species, especially the Indian black kites, have not been able to cope with high temperatures the city is witnessing this summer. Wildlife rescue centres in the city are overwhelmed with rescue calls and have treated over 300 black kites suffering from dehydration.

Black kites, which are medium-sized birds of prey that spend most of the time soaring and gliding in the skies, are now seen falling down because of dehydration. “We have rescued over 290 black kites suffering from dehydration,” said Naveen, a wildlife rescuer working for People for Animals in Kengeri.

The rescue centre is almost full and rescue teams are trying to accommodate more birds in need of help. Of the 290 rescued birds, 140 kites are still at the shelter.
