Wildlife watch

On World Wildlife Day, dust off the binoculars and head to some of the best sanctuaries in Telangana.

Ecotourism in the state is steadily increasing and there is a good reason for that. Our nine wildlife sanctuaries and three tiger reserves are a testament to the fact that Telangana is, in fact, rich in flora and fauna. Shankaran, Retired Deputy Conservator of Forests and Officer on Special Duty (Wildlife) in the Telangana Forest department has some tips for those who are up for a short get-away.
“October to March is the best time to visit sanctuaries because there is still plenty of water in the lakes, and the weather is ideal. After March, water bodies start to dry up, and trees shed leaves — the shedding may make it easier to spot animals, but the weather can be unbearable.

In the last month of the season, head to Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary, Pocharam and Kinnersani Wildlife Sanctuaries and Amarabad and Kawal Tiger Reserves. The two tiger reserves also preserve a host of panthers and there are good chances of spotting crocodiles at the Amarabad Tiger Reserve — it is about 130 km away from the city,” he explains. Bird lovers can have a great time in Manjeera and Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuaries, both in Medak district, which are about 110 and 60 km away from the city, respectively. Manjeera WLS has a man-made reservoir, where migratory birds of all kinds pay a visit, thus, it was also declared to be a bird sanctuary and is also famous for its marsh crocodiles. The Kawal Tiger Reserve is the place to be if you want to catch a glimpse of the majestic Indian bison, Gaur.
