First ever surgery using a robot will help cancer survivor finally conceive

The surgery was the first using a Da Vinci robotic surgeon.

There were many firsts when a 26-year-old cancer survivor's ovarian tissue which was frozen 11 years ago was transplanted back into her womb using a robot.

The woman who wishes to not be identified had her eggs removed at the age of 15 as she was undergoing fertility-crushing chemotherapy to cure her recurrent leukemia.

Dr Kutluk Oktay who removed her tissue, is the pioneering NYU Winthrop reproductive specialist and ovarian biologist who invented the precise freezing procedure in 1999.

The patient who is now newly-married has returned to Dr Oktay's clinic to have her tissue thawed and re-implanted so she can start a family.

It was the first ovarian transplant on Long Island, the first performed anywhere on an outpatient basis and the first such transplant to involve a surgical robot.

The surgery was the first using a Da Vinci robotic surgeon.

Dr Oktay told Daily Mail Online that everything looked good in a follow-up five days later, and that he expects the patient will be able to try for a baby within three to six months
