Why you need to brush your teeth more than once a day

Not brushing often can lead to health risks like dementia and heart disease.

A survey conducted in America found one third of millennials brush their teeth once a day only, the Daily Mail reported.

Market research company OnePoll conducted the study on 2,000 people.

62% of Americans also reported that they were too scared to go to the dentist. The data shows many Americans are being neglectful of oral hygiene routines despite having a fear of a dentist visit.

"Research has shown that there are many linkages to oral health and your overall health," Dr Lawrence Fung, a dentist in Los Angeles, told the Daily Mail.

Not brushing or flossing has serious health risks from gum disease, dementia even erectile dysfunction. People with dementia have also been found to have very high levels of bacteria in their mouths. Research has also discovered a link between gum disease and heart disease.

Brushing often can help minimise plaque that builds up from bacteria.

The American Dental Association recommends dedicating four minutes of our day to brushing our teeth.
