Managing lifestyle disorders with yoga

Apart from suggesting specific asanas to manage the disorders, the institute also highlighted simple home remedies to control the diseases.

Chennai: On International Day of Yoga, the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) at Tambaram Sanatorium, did something unique to educate people on handling major lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, stress and obesity.

The celebration commenced with a massive yoga demonstration followed by the release of the flyers in the presence of Prof Dr V. Banumathi, director, NIS, on Tuesday morning as part of its social commitment to ensure good health through the propagation of yoga. Apart from suggesting specific asanas to manage the disorders, the institute also highlighted simple home remedies to control the diseases.

“Of course one need not follow all the asanas that have been mentioned. One can select an asana that is suitable and easy to practice,” says Dr N. J. Muthukumar, associate professor, NIS. “But it will be better to consult one’s physician before commencing the yoga regimen,” he cautions. As to the home remedies, he said the specific grain or herb that could be consumed without difficulty could be selected and consuming all the herbs at one go is not necessary.
