Here are some foods that cause bad breath

A dentist also reveals how to combat it.

Bad breath or halitosis is a foul odour that comes from the mouth cavity. Bacteriologist Dr Harold Katz, founder of The Breath Company reveals the causes of and cure for the issue, according to the Daily Mail.

CAUSES OF BAD BREATH

What you eat, lifestyle habits and medications you take are big contributors. These factors can create an environment favourable to anaerobic, sulphur-producing and bacteria linked to bad breath. Smoking, alcohol and snoring can lead to dry mouth, which triggers a lack of saliva that can cause bad breath.

Dairy, meat and fish products contain proteins used as a food source by the anaerobic, sulphur-producing bacteria, the report revealed. Onions and garlic also contain sulphur compounds. Another food source for bacteria is sugar processed and refined. Coffee and juices are acidic and so makes a breeding environment for bacteria to thrive.

FOODS TO FIGHT HALITOSIS

Consuming fibre foods are a great preventative measure. Fresh foods that contain vitamins and minerals help build strong teeth. Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C help can reduce the plaque and improve gum health. Apples, celery and carrots contain good starch that helps wash away dental plaque.
