Movember is for men

This free marathon aims to raise awareness on sensitive male health issues and will be held in the city today.

On Sunday, a bevvy of city folk will kick start their day on the tracks – with beads of perspiration trickling down their forehead and pumped up Adrenalin levels. In keeping with the vibe of the Movember mania, this free Beardo-thon is here! The free marathon is directed at raising funds and awareness about health issues that are often put in the back-burner by men. Bengaluru Chronicle finds out more...

“Women always get a lot of privileges when it comes to health and personal hygiene. A lot of us now talk about periods and issues related to it. BUT, what about sensitive male issues like prostate cancer or testicular cancer? Awareness is important for us to let men know that they are not alone and that they can voice their issues out openly as much as women do,” opines Deepti Mohan, a 24-year Sandalwood artiste. Start from nowhere: If you are in two minds about giving this marathon a shot because you haven’t ever sprinted before, here is your chance. “Anybody can run,” states Vishal Singh, of the Bangalore Beard Club.

The 5k and 10 k marathon opens its doors to amateur runners and seasoned marathoners alike, with no measure of ones efficiency or prizes. “The only measure of how good you are is your will to have registered and given your best for an awareness run. We have warped societal constructs which prevent men from expressing or seeking help. This takes a toll on their health, and can even be life limiting. Do not show up only if you are good, show up to show you care for the men in your life,”he adds.

Asserting hope is to prepare men to be more vocal, Sidharth Mohanta, a fitness coach states, “Most men arent prepared for conversations about their health. So, when you run and show your support for causes like this, I believe it goes a great way in breaking the stigma around issues that have been pushed under the carpet for long. I hope past the panting, people get talking about things that concern the stronger sex!"

Vouching by how the general negligence towards men's health and emotional issues needs to stop, Aakash Nambiar, a social media analyst and ultra-marathoner adds, “I see this as an open forum for men, which can bring forth health awareness. Run to show you are open to the males, in your life, speaking up. The bearded look, which is often touted as a style statement can be channeled to spread a bigger message.” The event is taking place this morning between 5.30 am to 8.30 am in the city .
