Suspected polio case found in Uttar Pradesh

Six-year-old child has been admitted to the hospital and doctors suspect it could be a case of polio.

Lucknow: A suspected case of polio has been detected in Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh. According to district hospital superintendent Dr. S.I. Zaidi, the six-year-old child has been admitted to the hospital and doctors suspect it could be a case of polio.

“However, further checkups are being carried out to confirm whether it is actually polio,” the doctor said. Uttar Pradesh Health Minister S.P. Yadav said the matter has been taken seriously and a team of doctors have been asked to verify the same.

The Balrampur case comes just days after a VPDV type 2 was detected in a sewage sample collected from a site in Hyderabad in Telangana.

The Union Health Ministry has maintained that it probes thousands of such cases every year and none of them have been found to be polio and the child in this particular case has been tested and kept under observation. The Ministry said that no case of the crippling disease had been reported in the country since 2011.

According to agency reports, the World Health Organisation (WHO) India Country Office, when asked about the suspected polio case in Balrampur, denied that there was any such case.
