Here are 7 reasons why you wake up at night

We list reasons why you may not be getting the desired shut-eye at night.

No one likes waking up multiple numbers of times at night. The reasons can be varied. They may be anxious, they might need to make use of the washroom or simply have a bad dream. However, the one constant is that it disrupts sleep badly and once one wakes up, it is very difficult to go back to sleep again.

Here are seven reasons you might be waking up at night or the early hours of dawn.

The bedroom is too hot or too cold: Sleeping in the wrong temperature can make it harder to drift off and stay asleep. The recommended temperature is 18 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Eczema: Those who suffer from eczema find that their skin becomes extra itchy at night and can often make it harder to sleep. A consultation with a specialist is necessary in such cases.

Restless Leg Syndrome: Despite the name, it can also affect the arms, torso, head and other parts of the body. Allergy medication can make the syndrome worse too, so consult your doctor if you think you might be suffering.

Mattress is too firm: While a squishy mattress is not an ideal place to sleep, resting on one that’s too firm can create pressure in your hips, shoulders and lower back,

You need to use the washroom often: This could be Nocturia. For most people, urine production should be low at night. Avoid drinking too much in the evening, particularly diuretics like tea and coffee.

Drinking too much alcohol: Drinking a few glasses of wine can actually lead to disrupted sleep at night.

Stress: If one is stressed out, it affects sleep. Make sure to find time to unwind and de-stress before bed. Listen to relaxing music or try a colouring book or other mindful activity.
