Oxfam Trailwalker witnesses over 800 participants for Mumbai walkathon

Around 70 per cent rise in participants from last year for the Mumbai edition.

Mumbai: The country’s biggest walkathon Oxfam Trailwalker India got off to a good start today with over 800 participants walking to fundraise for equal world in Karjat, (near Mumbai), Maharashtra. The 7th edition of the Mumbai leg saw registrations from over 200 teams (each team has four walkers) which includes professionals, corporate, students and people from diverse groups with a passion for fitness and desire to change the world.

The 100km and 50km trails for Mumbai edition (13th -15th December 2019) pass through the majestic Western Ghats (which are enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Bhor Ghat in the quaint town of Karjat in Maharashtra. This year’s theme for the walkathon is ‘Equality4All’ and participants take on the ultimate challenge in teams of four to cover a massive distance of 100Kms in 48 hours and 50kms in 24 hours. This year the participation in the Mumbai edition of Oxfam Trailwalker India has increased by around 70 per cent.

“An increase in participation this year is a testament to the commitment of our walkers in creating an equal world without discrimination. Their support will help us strengthen our fight to ensure that poor children, particularly girls, go to schools, propel us to advocate harder for good quality and free government health services, and to put more feet on the ground for providing support to families suffering due to floods and disasters,” said Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar.

Oxfam Trailwalker India attracts many athletes, fitness enthusiast, homemakers and CEO's and CFO's of corporate companies. Many participants from Asian countries have flown to Mumbai to be part of this event.

Last year actress and fitness enthusiast Mandira Bedi flagged off Mumbai Trailwalker and appreciated Oxfam India’s work and the spirit of the participants to contribute through this unique fitness-fundraising initiative. This year for the very first time Hrithik Roshan’s fitness brand HRX has come on board as jersey partner to support the cause.

Oxfam Trailwalker is a zero-waste sustainable event and does not harm the environment. Over the years, Oxfam Trailwalker has successfully developed into a top-notch international fundraiser. It challenges walkers in 17 cities across 9 countries including Australia, Belgium, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom.
