Lack of hydration leads to kidney stones: Experts

While diet plays a significant role for a clean and healthy kidney, lack of hydration increases the risk of kidney stones

Chennai: With the heat rising, it’s not just heat strokes but also kidneys that are affected during summer.

While diet plays a significant role for a clean and healthy kidney, lack of hydration increases the risk of kidney stones. Though kidney stones also form due to genetic conditions also, diet and lifestyle practices also contribute to the formation of stones. As per estimates, one in every 20 people develops kidney stones at some point in their lifetime and about five to seven million people suffer from kidney stone diseases in the country.

“There is a loss of minerals through sweat in summer and needs to be compensated with high intake of fluids and water. Lack of fluids or water in the body makes urine concentrated, leaving more residual salt and dissolved minerals accumulated in the inner lining of the kidneys. The residue later leads to the formation of stones,” says senior urologist V. Pari.

Researcher Fredric Coe in one of his research says that because promptly eliminated in urine, water in ‘excess’ of needs prevents kidneys from supersaturating urine as much as they would have otherwise.

People who produce 2 to 2.5 liters of urine daily have 50 per cent less chance to develop kidneys stones than those who produce less.

While the effects of kidney stones can worsen the body systems, drinking adequate water can help prevent the risk of kidney stones, say renal experts.

The daily intake of drinking water is linked with the production of urine. Kidneys flush out all the toxins from our body by maintaining a balance of all the bodily fluids.

Therefore, it's important that there is enough of fluid intake, especially during summer as there is more loss of water.
