Scientists bring hope for women unable to have children with artificial ovary

The synthetic organ will be made from a woman's own tissue before being transplanted into her body to tackle infertility.

The progress medical science has achieved over the past few years has made life better for several people with devastating ailments. While motherhood means a lot to a number of women, many of them are deprived of it due to rare conditions.

But scientists seem to have given them hope as they have managed to make an artificial ovary to help women produce eggs naturally. The synthetic organ will be made from a woman’s own tissue before being transplanted into her body to tackle infertility.

The technique has been developed to help women facing chemotherapy and cancer treatment which may leave them infertile. Young girls who haven’t undergone puberty may become sterile even before ovaries can produce eggs due to chemotherapy drugs.

One way to prevent this is by freezing ovarian tissue and replacing it after chemotherapy, while the risk of being re-exposed to cancerous cells remains. But here all potentially cancerous cells are stripped from the tissue removing any chance of cancer.
