Look cool and confident this summer

Footwear is as important as your outfit itself. Summer is ideal to flaunt those wedges and chunky heels.

It is sweltering hot outside and how much ever one would like to don a simple Tee and a pair of shorts to office, it is just wishful thinking. Here are some summer fashion styling tips for office-going women, including a list of do’s and dont’s as suggested by Bhavya Chawla, Chief Stylist, Voonik.

Embrace Indian wear
Do: Nothing like Indian clothing for the summers since we Indians have mastered the art of using natural fabrics quite effortlessly for almost all occasions. Saris and kurtis make for perfect work wear. Buy saris that are made of natural fabrics, team them with hakoba blouse or cotton crop tops with boat neck or Peter Pan collar. As far as kurtis go, choose smart, chic and trendy ones that will not only keep you looking professional, but are also comfortable. There are also several options like short peplum kurtis that can be worn with solid palazzos and jodhpurs.

Don’t: Wear loud colours in saris or choose fabrics like chiffons or georgettes. For kurtis, choose solids, checks, stripes or ones with simple print. Avoid big floral / abstract prints and metallic embellishments.

Keep latest trends in mind
Do: The latest trends are, to a large extent, apt for each season, like this season oversized clothing is really trending. Team up loose airy pieces like a flounce blouse with flared pants – this will keep you cool and comfy, especially if your work involves a lot of activity or commute. It is also the ideal time to incorporate brighter colours like yellow, orange and coral in your work wardrobe with power suits and jackets.

Don’t: Do trends from head-to-toe. For example, brighter colours are trending, but never wear a bright-coloured jacket with bright bottoms along with bright footwear. Balance out colours by teaming them with neutral solids. Also, there is a thin line between oversized and frumpy; make sure not to wear loose clothes from top to bottom. Again, balance is key.

Complete the look
Do: Pay attention to the accessories. Use them to complete your look. Layered thin metallic necklaces are perfect for the western blouses with deep necklines. If you love watches, invest in a good white leather strap or steel watch and your summer ‘time’ issues will be addressed. Footwear is as important as your outfit itself. Summer is ideal to flaunt those wedges and chunky heels at work place. Open-toed shoes are also acceptable as long as your feet are well groomed. With ethnic clothing or Indian clothing plain leather mojaris look elegant.

Don’t: Avoid big chunky jewellery that restricts movement and distracts your work. Avoid jewellery with big stones and are too sparkly; these can be saved for the evening. As far as footwear goes, flip-flops and plastic flats are a big ‘no’ however hot the weather is and however casual your work atmosphere is.
