Last rites of Toms to be completed on sunday

The Kerala Cartoon Academy will hold a condolence meeting on the compound of the church after the funeral on Sunday.

Kottayam: The last rites of cartoonist Toms, 86, who died on Wednesday night, will be held at the Lourdhe Forane Church here at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Toms, the creator of the immortal ‘Boban and Molly,’ breathed his last at a private hospital here due to age-related problems after lying in coma for over six months.

The body will be placed at the Sahitya Pravarthaka Cooperative Society(SPCS) office in the town on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to enable the public to pay their homage. The Kerala Cartoon Academy will hold a condolence meeting on the compound of the church after the funeral on Sunday.

Toms is survived by his wife Thressia Kutty, children Boban, Bose, Molly, Rani, Dr Peter and Dr Princy. Toms alias Athikalam Vadakkal Thoppil V.T. Thomas was born to V.T. Kunjuthomman and Cicily Thomas at Veliyanadu in Kuttanadu, Alappuzha district, on May 6, 1929. After completing his schooling and intermediate, he did his BA from SB College, Changanassery.

He joined the Malayala Manorama daily as an assistant editor and later worked as a cartoonist. The cartoon ‘Boban and Molly’ was published in the Malayala Manorama weekly in 1957. His autobiography ‘Ente Bobanum Mollyum’ was released by actor Mammootty at a function held at the Kottayam press club on December 29 last year.
